“El Paso’s Mount Cristo Rey” Heritage Video
To Premiere at Fund-raiser
El Paso, Texas - March 1, 2007 – Capstone Productions Inc. announces the premiere showing
of its newest heritage video, “El Paso’s Mount Cristo Rey,” as a fund-raiser to benefit the Mount Cristo Rey Restoration Committee.
The video explores the historical and cultural significance of Sierra de Cristo Rey in Sunland Park, N.M. – a Catholic shrine, a world-class sculpture and a geological treasure.
It highlights the dedication and spirit of the Restoration Committee members. For decades, the volunteers have maintained the mountain’s dirt trails, making it possible for thousands of pilgrims to climb Mount Cristo Rey each year. The video also documents how the mountain was devastated by the historic floods of 2006, jeopardizing future pilgrimages.
“El Paso’s Mount Cristo Rey” will premiere March 24 in the Mount Cristo Rey Room at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino. Admission is free but seating is limited, so tickets are required. A donation of $5 per person is requested at the door, with all proceeds going to the Restoration Committee. Listen to the Leon Metz Radio Show on March 3 for details on how to pick up free tickets. The Leon Metz Radio Show airs Saturdays from 10 am to noon on NewsTalk 690 KTSM.
Additional fund-raising screenings to benefit Mount Cristo Rey will be held throughout March and April In El Paso and Las Cruces. In May, the program will be released for purchase on DVD.
“El Paso’s Mount Cristo Rey” is a co-production of Capstone Productions Inc. and the El Paso County Historical Society as part of the El Paso Gold Heritage Television Series, programs that feature the history and heritage of the Paso del Norte region. The series producer is native El Pasoan Jackson Polk of Capstone Productions.
“While we were in production, the El Paso area was hit by more than a month of record-breaking rains,” Polk said. “We were able to document how the rains damaged Cristo Rey, and what the video shows is the need for an asphalt road on the mountain. That’s why Capstone Productions is holding screenings in March and April to help raise funds to provide a permanent fix.”
Polk encourages El Paso-area churches and civic groups to contact Capstone Productions to schedule fund-raiser screenings during April. Details on fund-raising events will be posted on the Web site www.mountcristorey.com
Ruben Escandon, vice president of the Restoration Committee, said the need is great. “We thank Jackson Polk and Capstone Productions for producing this video and helping us get the word out about the needs for Mount Cristo Rey,” he said. “We hope that we can raise funds to install an asphalt road and proper drainage, so that future rains won’t result in closing the mountain to hikers and pilgrims.”
